Indian film industry's fascination for the ‘wood’ suffix
Indian film industry's fascination for the ‘wood’ suffixAs the Indian film industry turns a 100 years old today, here's looking at our different industries and their fascination for the 'wood' suffix

Globally, the Indian film industry is almost synonymous with Bollywood. But the 100-year-old industry, which makes the most number of films than any other country in a year, has strong regional presence as well. Much like the Hindi film industry that has twisted the word Hollywood to its convenience, other industries have also sought refuge in the 'wood' suffix. While some of them have chosen to tweak it based on the place of operation, others have named them after the language. Here's a look at the many Indian 'woods'.

Bollywood: The biggest film industry in the country, it has been named after 'Bombay', from where it operates. Traditionally, it has been ruled by stars, but this year has seen scripts, scriptwriters and directors take centre stage, with many performer-actors rising in popularity.

Kollywood: The Tamil film industry is named after Kodambakam, an area in Chennai, which used to be the hub of all filmi activity in Tamil Nadu. Kollywood has always been known for idol worshipping. The Konkani film industry is also named thus, after the language. April 24, 1950, saw the first Konkani film release and this date, ever since, has been celebrated as the Konkani Cinema Day.

Tollywood: The Telugu film industry, which is one of the bigger ones in the country, is named after the language of Andhra Pradesh. This industry is known for making total commercial entertainers. If Telugu has inspired the name in Andhra, in Bengal, it is the area of Tollygunge that is responsible for it's name. An industry that's known to produce the most 'quality' films, it is synonymous with directors who've altered the course of parallel cinema in India like Satyajit Ray.

Sandalwood: Considering the fact that Karnataka has many sandalwood forests, one doesn't have to look too far to spot the inspiration. The industry has produced many matinee idols, but the names that have made a national mark are directors like Girish Kasaravalli, MS Sathyu and Girish Karnad.

Mollywood: Kerala's film industry is called Mollywood because of Malayalam language. This industry is also known for its art house cinema. Just like Kerala, Maharashtra's film industry has been christened Mollywood because of its operating language Marathi. This industry has a right mix of class and mass.
Manipuri film industry has been christened based on the first letter of the state's name. Manipuri films seek inspiration from Bollywood and are complete entertainers.

GollywoodGujarat's film industry is called so because of its regional language, Gujarati. This is one of the older industries with its first film dating back to 1932.

Pollywood: No prizes for guessing this one. The Punjabi film industry takes its name from the language. Punjabi films also date back a long time. Recent years have seen a revival of the industry, with many popular Punjabi Bollywood actors doing films in their native tongue.

Ollywood: Odisha calls its industry Ollywood because it is named after the region's language, Odia. Initially known to be a lesser famous sister of Bengali films, the industry has now branched out and earned its own space.

Lollywood: Lambani, a nomadic community, have a film industry, albeit with just half a dozen films to boast of till now. They call it Lollywood based on the language. The films are made mainly in Karnataka, which happens to have many Lambanis living there.

Priya Anand's great escapePriya Anand, who is basking in glory over Edhir Neechal, has carved a niche for herself in Kollywood, Tollywood and Bollywood. The pretty actress has recently revealed that she wanted to become an assistant director before entering filmdom.

However, she got a chance to don the greasepaint and now the actress feels that it was a great escape after seeing the problems faced by the assistant directors. Priya Anand adds that she still wants to learn the technicalities involved in film-making even though she has given up the desire to assist directors.

Telugu Friday: Will Nagarjuna be able to create magic once again with his new look in 'Greeku Veerudu'?

Greeku Veerudu Movie ReviewGreeku Veerudu Review - Greeku VeeruduMovie Review - Greeku Veerudu Telugu Movie Review - Greeku Veerudu Review Rating - Nagarjuna Film Review

Story:

King Nagarjuna, Nayanatara and Dasarath’s ‘Greeku Veerudu’ movie released today. Nag fans are having high expectation on this movie. Our heroNagarjuna playing NRI role here. He is coming as Chandu in the movie. He doesn’t consider the love and emotions. He is basically an event manager. He runs an event management business in USA. Always he will give more value money. Our female lead Nayanatara as Sadhya here in the movie. She is a Doctor basically. She is dedicated to service. She works with the charitable association. The association name is 'Make a Wish'. She believes in emotion, family members and love. Unfortunately our hero comes to India for the first time. Chandu travels to India to meet his grandparents. When he is coming to India on the way Chandu meets Sandhya.  What happens next? For the rest of the story you must watch the movie on Big Screen..

Analysis:

Coming to Greeku Veerudu Analysis narration of the movie is slow pace. Here Screen Play and Direction of the movie is unimpressive. Movie is basically family entertainer. Coming to the analysis entire sentimenmt scenes in K vishwanath’s residence will make an impression of family audience. There is no distance downwards in the scenes connecting Nagaarjuna and Vishwanath. Even between Nagarjuna and Nayanthara to bring to the front of the movie. Cliamax is also a big disappointment to the movie. Our Directors Dasarath gives the impression to be influenced by famous director Srinu Vytla. This movie climax also in comic way.

Performances:

Coming to star performances of the movie our Manmadudu Nagarjuna is handsome looking good with his gym physic. He had done justice to his respective role.  He is looking too good in songs. Coming to female lead Nayanthara, She is looking dull in the movie when compare to Nagarjuna. She ok in all areas. She had done a decent job in her respective role. Another female lead is here. That is Meera Chopra. But her role is extremely small.  But she had done a good job here. Great actor and director K Vishwanth is usual in grandfather role. Kota Srinivasarao and Ashish Vidyarthi are villains here. They are good in their respective roles. Brahmanandam, M S Narayana and Dharmavarapu Subramanyam and Kovai Sarala entertain you in few comedy scenes. Rest of the actors also had done justice to their respective roles.

Technicalities:

The fashionable director Dasarath had chosen the script is related to love and human relations. Here story of the movie is good in all areas. Coming to the screenplay of the movie, it is not up to the mark. It is a big draw back to the movie. Movie is too bore in some times. The narration of the movie is slow pace. Coming to music of S S Thman too good in all areas of the movie.  This movie music and background score is differ to other movies. Definitely that credit goes to Thaman only.  Cinematography by Anil Bhandari is wealthy. Marthand K Venkatesh editing is good in all areas. Dasarath dialogues are big plus to the movie. Here no need of Choreography. S Ravinder is the art director to this movie. He had done a decent job here. D Siva Prasad Reddy is producing this movie on Kamakshi Movies banner. Coming production values are good here.

Final Word:

Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Greeku Veerudu is a complete family show with a bit of comedy and a very less percentage of mass elements. It is just an Average movie.

Greeku Veerudu Review Rating: 2.25/5
